WONDERCON 2004 DAY 2 REPORT Post #1

WonderCon is being held this weekend in San Francisco, California. The DC: Beyond the Universe Panel filled Day 2's brief coverage.

Stan Lee will be contributing to the upcoming DC Comics Presents... one-shots. These one-shots are a tribute to Julius Schwartz and his influential editorial work in pioneering the cover-driven story issue. For this purpose, each one-shot includes two different writing/art teams that interpret two different stories from the same cover. Other creators lending their talents to these tribute one-shots include Brian Azzarello, Kurt Busiek, John Byrne, Adam Hughes, Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, Jerry Ordway, Alex Ross, Walt Simonson, Len Wein, and many more.

DC announced an Action Heroes: Captain Atom archive, featuring Captain Atom stories by Steve Ditko, the first archive of Charlton work. Charlton and its characters, including the bestial Animal Man, the wisecracking Blue Beetle, and the powerful Captain Atom, were merged into the main DC Universe after 1986's major Crisis on Infinite Earths reboot. Captain Atom recently died a hero when he sacrificed himself to stop a Kryptonite meteor from destroying Earth in Superman/Batman #6.

After the "City Walls" arc in Green Arrow, a new crime boss named Brick will be introduced to Star City in the "New Blood" storyarc.

Jerry Ordway will be illustrating writer Geoff Johns' upcoming two-part "Wake the Sandman" story in JSA. Ordway did art duties for the JSA's mother team in the 80's All-Star Squadron series.

Sam Keith's Scratch mini-series reintroduces supernatural elements to the DC mainline. The mini-series stars Batman and a new teenage werewolf character.

DC announced an upcoming four-part Majestic mini-series. It will be done by the creative team of Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning, and Karl Kerschl, who did the Superman books' "Strange New Visitor" arc starring Wildstorm's reality-displaced Mr. Majestic himself. Covers will be supplied by Ed McGuinness.

Día 3

WonderCon is being held this weekend in San Francisco, California. ComiX-Fan was there for Day 3 to follow DC's Vertigo Panel.

Morrison TPs: This July's Sebastian O trade paperback, which coincides with Grant Morrison's new Seaguy mini-series, may be the start of reprinting his other past Vertigo work at some point. Though nothing is concrete right now. Sebastian O helped launch DC's Vertigo imprint more than 10 years ago. Morrison's other past Vertigo work includes The Filth, The Invisibles, a short run on Swamp Thing, reinventing mainstream DCU properties Animal Man and Doom Patrol, and the latter's spinoff, Flex Mentallo.

New Morrison projects: Although Seaguy is going ahead as scheduled, starting with May 19's #1, there is still no news on the scheduling for Morrison's two other in his trio of new Vertigo mini-series, Vimanarama and WE3.

Vimanarama: This new mini-series is described as part Bollywood romance/comedy, part cosmic adventure.

WE3: This new mini-series involves a trio of animal assassins (a dog, a cat, and a rabbit) garbed with heavy armor and artillery. It reunites Morrison with his oft-time cohort, Frank Quitely. Past collaborations include Flex Mentallo, The Invisibles, JLA: Earth 2, New X-Men, and Weird War Tales.

Blood + Water sequel: Writer Judd Winick's followup to his 2002 mini-series reinventing the culture of vampires will be released next year. Also to coincide with this sequel is the rescheduled trade paperback of the complete Blood + Water first volume.

Fables: This summer will see a flashback story that chronicles Bigby Wolf's military service during World War II, wherein he meets with Frankenstein. Writer Bill Willingham will be joined by guest art team Tony Akins (G.I. Joe) and Jimmy Palmiotti (Daredevil, The Punisher).

Hellblazer: As DC/Vertigo's longest running series, which stars the DCU's wisecracking dark mage John Constantine, the book will be having a celebration of sorts for its landmark #200 issue. It will feature art by Steve Dillon, Marcelo Frusin, and Leonard Manco, the former, current, and upcoming Hellblazer artists.

The Losers: Writer Andy Diggle's high-octane action/espionage series will be graced by guest-artist Ale Garza (Titans/Young Justice: Graduation Day, Gen 13, Robotech).

The Originals: Dave Gibbons' original graphic novel is scheduled to come out in October. Gibbons is most known for his work as artist on the groundbreaking Watchmen for writer Alan Moore, the series that pioneered the realistic depiction of superheroes. The Originals, which is set in a similar but more surreal world to ours, is Gibbons' first foray as both writer and artist.

Sandman: Neil Gaiman's Sandman: Endless Nights hardcover graphic novel, which reached The New York Times' Bestseller List in 2003, will be offered as a softcover sometime this summer.
